Knut Has Died

Knut, the world’s most loved and best knownpolar bear has died suddenly in his home at the Berlin Zoo only hours ago! The brave little polar bear who has had the odds stacked against him since rejected by his mother at birth – became an international celebrity following calls to “let nature take it course” after he was born.

Details are very sketchy at the moment but news sources have reported that witnesses said they saw Knut sitting in his enclosure when his left leg began to shake. It was then, stated that Knut walked around in circles and then fell, lifeless into the water. Others suggest that he had some kind of spasm after entering the water.

His body was retrieved from the water and zoo officials said that an autopsy will be performed on Monday. With no health concerns being reported in our recent memory, we can’t even begin to speculate on the cause.

Thomas Doerflein, Knut’s primary keeper since birth, died in 2008 of a heart attack.

Animal rights activitists, who would have been happy to see Knut die in the beginning, are now trumpeting their cause by suggesting the stress of living in captivity is at the centre of Knut’s tragic death. This, despite the profilen that Knut’s life brought to the plight of polar bears in the wild and championing the cause of global warming and climate change.

We will keep you updated as this story progresses.

Polar Bear Video of The Week is Back – Churchill Polar Bears

Finally back to submitting our weekly favourite polar bear video from our vast collection. Let’s go way back to our honeymoon in 2005 and although the snow was sparse and the bears were even more sparse, the ones we did see were very entertaining. Our driver told us that some photographers come out for weeks just to see polar bears wrestling like this (although he may have just been trying to make us feel better!)

Enjoy

Polar Bear Video of the Week July 13

Sorry, we’ve been a bit slack updating the website, but here is the latest video of the week – once again of Neil the Polar Bear playing with what look like a large water bottle, which quickly became a makeshift toy at Detroit Zoo.

Check out the whole video but the best parts in our opinion are at:
* 0:20 seconds where Neil is standing on his toy
* 1:10 when Neil is trying to bite and sink the toy
* 1:45 finds this crazy polar bear jumping on his toy and almost swimming freestyle as he chases it over to the right hand side of the viewing area
*and finally at 3:20 which is the high five with Neil the polar bear

Enjoy
